Sunrise Incredible Edibles Garden takes shape
March 24 marked the installation of our Agricultural Garden located below the Sunrise Discovery Pavilion within the Alta Vista Children's Garden.
First to Bryan - We really really really appreciate your support in making the CG Ag Garden take shape! Using the tractor to move those scoops of dirt and mulch makes the whole job so much easier! Your expertise is making this garden happen!
Next to Ed F. and Don N. - The beds are great! We appreciate you picking up the materials, building the beds and bringing them to the Garden.
And to our workers for installation: On March 24, our hard workers were Bryan, Carol Jefferies with her children Levi, Phineas and Oona; Gail Stram; Vincente; and Farmer Jones. We worked for more than 3 hours moving beds into the sunrise pattern according to the plan, leveling the beds, cutting and fitting hardware cloth (gopher-stoppers), shovelin' and rakin' that dirt around, spreading mulch, and building the half circle strawberry bed using leftover blocks and capstones from Discovery Pavilion materials as well as native rock.
The Sunrise Incredible Edibles Garden is one more special feature to add to our Alta Vista Children's Garden plan. Children and families will be able to see "What grows well here in Vista" and learn about nutrition from the garden. This garden was funded by a grant from the San Diego Farm Bureau which will also provide fencing.
At the Kids in the Garden class on March 13, our kids planted their seeds for beans, corn, radishes, broccoli, squash and lettuce. We will plant these starts into our new garden beds at the April 10 class starting at 9:00 a.m. Y'all come!

AVG Families in the Garden Composting Class to be at Vista Library April 18
After a meeting with Vista Library's new Branch Manager Wynne Weiss, Alta Vista Gardens will be offering a community contact program at the Vista Library.
On April 18 from 2 to 3 pm at the Community Room, Farmer Jones will share a free Families in the Garden: Composting class. She will teach what compost is, why we should be composting and what the ingredients are for compost. Each family will take home a bottled compost (bring at least one 2-liter soda bottle - more if you have them). Information sheets about compost containers will be shared.
Families will receive flyers encouraging them to join in the AVG Earth Day Festival 2010 on April 24 and the monthly Kids in the Garden Class.
